DHL delivery driver jobs in the UK

DHL in the UK is three separate businesses, and 'DHL driver' can mean an owner driver, an employed courier, or a Class 1 job on a supermarket contract.

Three DHLs, three kinds of driving job

DHL Parcel UK

The domestic parcel network, built from the former UK Mail business. It delivers with a mix of employed van drivers at its depots and self-employed owner drivers who run a dedicated route in their own van. Owner driver adverts will say so; the pay is per route or per stop, and you carry the vehicle costs.

DHL Express

The international courier arm. Its drivers, called couriers, are employed, uniformed and trained through DHL's own certification programme, handling time-critical import and export shipments from the service centres. These are payroll jobs with shifts, and they tend to ask for a clean licence and a customer-facing manner because the same person collects and delivers for business accounts.

DHL Supply Chain

The largest employer of the three in the UK, running warehousing and transport for retailers, manufacturers and the NHS. Most driving jobs here are employed HGV Class 1 and Class 2 roles on a named client contract, alongside home-delivery van work for retailers. The job advert will usually name the contract or the site rather than the customer.

What you need

  • Employed roles: the right licence category for the vehicle, a Driver CPC and tachograph card for HGV work, the right to work in the UK, and background checks. Express roles often add a criminal record check because of airside and customs access.
  • Owner driver routes: your own van meeting the depot's size and age rules, goods in transit and hire and reward insurance, and registration with HMRC as self-employed.

How the pay works

Employed roles pay hourly or salaried with shift premiums, and HGV work on Supply Chain contracts is typically the best paid driving in this group. Owner drivers are paid per route and need to net off vehicle costs; our courier pay breakdown and van hire versus buying guide cover the sums. If you're considering the step up to HGV, HGV jobs shows the current market.

How to apply
